North by Northwest – Movie ReviewPosted: September 16, 2015
North by Northwest may be the quintessential Alfred Hitchcock film.
Released just after Vertigo and just before Psycho, it was a break from darker themes and a return to the mysteries and “wrong man” themes of his earlier work. Only this time perfecting the themes and turning them into the “Hitchcock picture to end all Hitchcock pictures,” as the film’s screenwriter, Ernest Lehman, put it.
The film centers around an unsuspecting advertising executive named Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) who gets mistaken for a federal spy by a group of international criminals. As the story unfolds, a beautiful blonde is brought into the mix (Eva Marie Saint), identities are revealed, trusts betrayed, and the audience is brought on a cross-country adventure they’ll never forget.
